"Village Pet Store And Charcoal Grill" by banksy

the first week in october witnessed the latest genre-diversion (animatronics!?!) masterpiece by elusive street artist, banksy- the "Village Pet Store And Charcoal Grill" ... a mini film released recently was created to document the details. playful, creative, subversive... love it! big beard- gentle voice

ok, sam beam has three years of record making on william fitzsimmons. so, call him a rip off- they do have a lot in common. first and most evident is the giant beards, gentle voices, and great ability to write songs that soothe the soul. in addition, they both had successful careers prior to their musical projects. beam as a professor of film and fitzsimmons as masters certified therapist.

i'm enjoying fitzsimmons'
new record, and i think it's because it sounds a lot like early iron & wine, a sound that i've been saying for a few years, beam shouldn't have departed from.

All of my stores are about the action of grace on a character who is not very willing to support it, but most people think of these stories as hard, hopeless, brutal, etc...

mas familia, por favor

my brother, his wife and their beautiful new baby just moved out to portland. tomorrow i get to meet my nephew and welcome them to the northwest... it is good to have a bit more family near by. and i love the idea of my brother being within driving distance. actually, sylas can't wait to take a train-ride down to visit his new primo.

T
he fact is that in order not to be scandalized, one has to have a whole view of things, which not many of us have...

Well, if it's a symbol, to hell with it.

-Flannery O'Connor, upon someone referring to the Eucharist as a "pretty good symbol."

blood [& art]

i've always been drawn to the
careful presentation of blood in art. i say careful, because it can easily be gory or gratuitous, causing the art to loose depth, complexity and the ability to speak. blood, done well, has the ability to mark a piece, draw the eye, create a narrative. it speaks to mortality, life, mystery. it contains themes of violence and grace. at one point i was considering how i might use blood in an actual piece but shied away from the idea because... it's, well, blood. right?
jordan eagles does most of his art with blood. he mixes it with other agents to create fantastic displays of colour and pattern. he preserves it resin to maintain the vibrant hues of red that can only be seen in fresh, oxygen exposed, living blood. check out his recent show... new blood.

music to write papers by

after 4 years in graduate school, i've written a handful of papers, most of them in noisy coffee shops. at this point i'm deaf in one ear and can't hear out of the other because i've only in the last few months acquired sound-reducing ear-buds (ie. the volume of the music has always had to compete with the esspresso machine to my left, the women's bible study group to my right and the roudy highschoolers to my other left). at any rate, this post is to highlight the albums i've written the most papers to. some new, some old, all able to offer a groove that has been conducive to the organization of my thoughts.

fall

in praise of fall: i like turning trees- first the burst of color and then the transition to skeletal states. i like brisk weather and the way it feels to drink coffee on a cold morning. i like the option of accessorizing my wardrobe a little more- hats, cardigans, vests, jackets, scarfs. i feel better in trousers and now its not uncomfortable to wear them like on some summer days. i enjoy dark beer, or a pipe or cigar while on a porch with friends. best of it all, i love the bundled up walks with lover and kids- my funny little men falling over because the jackets and layers have made them too stiff. i particularly like the music of fall. above are my three favorites this year.
other notable, fall appropriate releases this year are by: bon iver, fleet foxes and bonnie prince billy... but i've already blogged about them. welcome october.
