i did a sketch of this concept about two or three years ago in a note book. ruth has been asking me to do a larger version for some time- well, here it is...

by the way- i'm quite excited about walnut ink... it's a brown permanent ink extracted from walnuts. you can make your own if you are committed. or you can buy it... like i did.

a passing

larry norman died yesterday. for better or worse, he is largely to blame for "christian music"... although his relationship with ccm has always been contentious. regardless, he kept it real his entire life and finally died after many years of illness. i have a "fish" pendant my dad got at one of norman's first shows back in the day. thanks for the music larry.

no grace for anyone

recently watched the latest cohen brothers film, "no country for old men." i liked it very much and this is not a review, suffice to say, it is a beautifully made film entertaining themes of greed, violence, fate... and grace. i was struck with three scenes in it that seemed to be linked- all of them involved a "good samaritan" situation where there was a party in need and a party moved by human compassion. in each of the scenes, the one in need of help jockeyed for power by offering the other person multiple hundred-dollar bills in recompense for what the person was already moved to do out of kindness. the impact of the decision is obvious- somehow, the "good samaritan" becomes less good because their helping impulse has been given a price. the question now becomes how one can raise the price and exploit the situation. a tag-line on some posters for the film reads, "you can't stop what's coming"- well... unless its grace.

"la danse" on the brain

a year and a half ago i was asked to do a mural-sized (about 7' x 10') interpretation of henri matisse's "la dance" for my school. for various reasons it has not been possible until now- my canvases arrived in the mail today. i will say that i am excited and terrified. matisse's three versions are above in chronological order. i've been practicing for a while, but still not settled on the color palate. not sure how to honor someone's work and make it my own. i've enjoyed falling in love with this piece as its brilliance was not easy for me to access right away. here's a little article that unpacks that a bit. so, this is to say... i feel a bit out of my league having never done anything this big, prominent and permanent... with that i'm grateful for and humbled by the opportunity. so if you can pray for an artist to access something "brilliant" in the creative process and delivery... please do, i'll keep you posted.
