open your eyes

a few years ago, my brother and i had a conversation about a series of art projects he did as an exploration in how well people "see." he would secretly install a piece of "art out of context"... and then watch people pass it by. how well do you notice detail? do you see beauty in your world? do you notice art? appreciate patterns? absorb colors? slow down enough to feel and touch and see and smell and taste? how well do you pay attention to the world around you? for an extreme project of similar nature, check out little people, i love it.

Phil, my name is Jen (I'm in NT with you, bleached hair, offered you a ride this summer when your car wouldn't start after class...) I've been meaning to comment for awhile...I stumbled across your blog while bouncing around through some other Mars Hill blogs. I love your art. And you have a very cute little boy. (I have two cute little red-heads myself.)

This weekend I sat outside with Fiona, my three year old while she played dinosaurs, and in the absence of a book to stick my nose in, I happened to look up at the trees around us and noticed how amazingly green the fir/cedar/evergreen/whatevertheyare trees were. How finely textured their limbs were. And wondered how long it had been since I just sat there and noticed. Too long...

hey jen, thanks for commenting... i'm always curious who the 40-odd guests are every day. good to finally know your name. beauty is everywhere (like that line in American Beauty when the bag is swirling in the air). not to mention the beauty of your little fiona playing with dinosaurs! that's awesome.
bryan, i'm curious what you and josh had to say about it. remember our conversation about me rearanging the living room? or was it you? anyways, it was a good talk.
